They strip old coverings, repair or rebuild frames and support, replace padding, and cut, fit, and sew new fabric tightly and cleanly over the piece, reviving worn or damaged furniture and customizing its look.

The work blends craftsmanship, sewing, and an eye for fit and finish, often on antiques and custom pieces. Upholsterers work in upholstery shops, for furniture makers, and as independent craftspeople.
