Questions, answered

What is Skillswitch?

Skillswitch is a free career-change platform. You take a 5-minute work-personality test, and every occupation in our curated database is scored against your results and ranked by fit. Each job shows its AI replacement risk, typical salary bands by region, and how long retraining usually takes — so you can compare paths before you leap.

How does the career test work?

It's 30 quick trade-off questions — no résumé, no essay answers. Your answers map you across 11 work-trait dimensions, like people, creative, analytical, physical, structured, autonomy, and stakes. Every occupation is scored on the same dimensions, so your matches come from how closely a job's shape lines up with yours, not from keywords in a CV.

Is Skillswitch free?

Yes — the test, your ranked matches, and job comparisons are all free with an account. Skillswitch earns money through affiliate partnerships with some of the training resources we link to. Partner links never influence how jobs are matched or ranked.

What is an AI risk score?

Every occupation carries an AI replacement risk score on a 10-point scale, modeled on what the job's day-to-day tasks are actually made of. Work that is physical, relational, or judgment-heavy scores low; routine, screen-bound information work scores high. Each role also has an AI augmentation score — how much AI is likely to help someone in that job rather than replace them — with a written explanation for both.

Which careers are safest from AI?

The lowest-risk careers in our data are hands-on and human-centered: skilled trades (a residential electrician scores 3/10), therapy and rehabilitation, and care work. The highest exposure sits in routine information handling — bookkeeping and technical writing both score 8/10. The pattern: the more your job happens in the physical world or in a relationship of trust, the harder it is to automate.

Do I have to go back to university to switch careers?

Usually not. Every role on Skillswitch lists its typical retraining time — from 0–3 months up to 4+ years — and the usual route in: apprenticeship, vocational certificate, university degree, on-the-job, or self-directed learning. About four in ten occupations in our database can typically be retrained for in under a year, and dozens of those also carry low AI risk.

How is this different from Myers-Briggs or 16personalities?

Those tests sort you into a personality type and leave the career question to you. Skillswitch measures only traits that predict job fit and scores every occupation on the same dimensions, so the ranking itself is different: it matches your personal dimensions and preferences to each job's real characteristics in a meaningful way. The output isn't a four-letter label; it's a ranked list of concrete jobs with salary, retraining, and AI-risk data attached.

What salary data does Skillswitch show?

Honest ranges, not fake precision: each role shows a salary band (minimum to maximum) for the USA, the UK, the EU average, and Spain, in local currency. Bands are averaged from multiple sources, such as national labor statistics and Spanish collective-agreement (convenio) ranges.

Can I retake the test?

Yes, whenever you like. People change — especially people actively working on changing. Retaking the test rebuilds your profile and re-ranks every match against who you are now.

Your fit is in the data.
