Description

A sign maker designs and fabricates the signs that businesses and organizations use to identify and advertise themselves — storefront signs, banners, vehicle graphics, illuminated displays, and wayfinding. They design layouts, cut and print materials, build and assemble signs from vinyl, metal, acrylic, and electronics, and often install the finished product.

The work blends design sense with hands-on fabrication and, increasingly, digital printing and CNC tools. Sign makers work in sign shops and print businesses.

The job suits creative, practical people who enjoy both the design and the making, and like producing visible, tangible work that goes up where everyone can see it.
