Description

A hardware engineer designs and develops the physical components of computers and electronic devices — processors, circuit boards, memory, and the systems that tie them together. They create schematics and specifications, build and test prototypes, debug electrical problems, and work with manufacturers to bring designs into production.

The role combines electrical engineering, physics, and hands-on testing, working where software meets the physical world. Hardware engineers work at computer, semiconductor, and consumer-electronics companies.

Unlike software, hardware mistakes are expensive and slow to fix once manufactured, so the job rewards careful, methodical people who get the design right before committing it to silicon and steel.
