Oceanographer

Oceanographers study the physics, chemistry, biology, and geology of the oceans — currents, temperature, marine life, and the seafloor. The work combines research cruises (deploying instruments, collecting samples at sea) with extensive data analysis and modelling back on shore to understand ocean systems and their role in climate.

They work for research institutes, universities, and government agencies, often spending weeks at sea. The role suits people who can handle demanding ship-based fieldwork and who enjoy modelling large, dynamic natural systems.
