Surgical technologist

A surgical technologist is part of the operating-room team, preparing and managing the sterile field and instruments during surgery. Before an operation they set up the OR, sterilize and arrange instruments, and gown the team; during it they pass instruments to the surgeon, anticipate needs, hold retractors, and maintain strict sterile technique to prevent infection.

The role demands focus, anatomical and procedural knowledge, and calm under pressure in a high-stakes environment. Surgical techs work in hospital and outpatient operating rooms, often across many specialties, and the job suits steady, detail-oriented people who want to be at the center of surgery without the years of training a surgeon requires.
