Prosthetist / orthotist

A prosthetist/orthotist designs, fits, and manages artificial limbs (prosthetics) and supportive braces (orthotics) for patients with missing limbs, injuries, or musculoskeletal conditions. They assess each patient's needs, take measurements and casts, design custom devices, fit and adjust them, and follow up over time as the patient's body and activity change.

The role combines clinical assessment, biomechanical knowledge, hands-on craftsmanship, and ongoing patient relationships, since a well-made device can transform someone's mobility and independence. Practitioners work in clinics, hospitals, and specialized labs, and the job suits people who want to merge technical, creative problem-solving with direct, life-changing patient care.
