Naval Architect

A naval architect designs the hulls and structures of ships and offshore platforms — shaping the vessel for stability, speed, strength, and seaworthiness, and running the hydrodynamic and structural calculations that prove it will float, handle the waves, and survive its loads. They work from first principles and tank testing through to the detailed drawings a shipyard builds from.

They work for shipyards, design firms, navies, and offshore-energy companies. The role suits analytically strong people who like heavy engineering under the unforgiving constraints of the sea, and who can hold a whole vessel in their head while sweating a single structural detail.
