Private tutor (academic)

View resources

Description

A private academic tutor provides one-on-one instruction to help students master specific subjects and improve their grades. They assess each student's needs and gaps, explain concepts in ways that click, reinforce schoolwork, build study skills and confidence, and tailor their approach to how the individual learns — adapting in ways a classroom can't.

The work is personalized and relationship-based, often building over time with the same students. Tutors work independently, for tutoring companies, or online, across all subjects and levels.

The job suits patient, knowledgeable, encouraging people who enjoy working closely with students, like explaining things until they're understood, and find reward in seeing individual learners gain confidence and skill.
