Composer (classical)

A classical composer writes original concert music — for orchestra, chamber ensembles, choir, or solo instruments — handling melody, harmony, counterpoint, form, and orchestration. The work is largely solitary and notation-based, developing musical ideas over long timescales and refining a personal compositional language.

Composers typically work on commission or for specific performances, collaborating with conductors and musicians to bring scores to life and adapting to the practicalities of live ensembles. Income is irregular, and reputation is built slowly through performed and recorded works.
