Ceramicist

A ceramicist makes functional and decorative objects from clay — throwing on a wheel, hand-building, glazing, and firing work in a kiln. The craft requires continuous tactile judgement: reading the moisture and movement of the clay, controlling form in real time, and managing the unpredictable chemistry of glazes and firing temperatures.

Many ceramicists run their own studio practice, producing tableware, vessels, or sculptural pieces sold through galleries, markets, and commissions. The work is physical and process-driven, and consistent quality comes only from years of repetition and an intimate feel for the material.
