Type designer / typographer

A type designer creates typefaces — drawing and refining hundreds of glyphs into a coherent, functional family — while a typographer applies type expertly to set text for clarity, hierarchy, and beauty. The work is exacting and historically literate, demanding fine optical judgement across countless small decisions.

Type design is slow, specialised, and often solitary, with typefaces released through foundries or commissioned for brands. Generative tools assist with pairing and layout, but original typeface design depends on deep letterform knowledge that current AI cannot reliably match.
