Calligrapher

A calligrapher creates hand-lettering and lettering art — invitations, certificates, logos, signage, and original pieces — controlling pen, brush, ink, and pressure to produce expressive, precise letterforms. The craft draws on knowledge of scripts and historical traditions alongside steady, trained hand control.

Most work independently on commissions and their own work, and increasingly teach. While digital fonts can imitate the look, hand-executed calligraphy is a physical performance whose value lies in the skilled, real-time mark-making of the hand.
